WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife of eight years, Cherelle Griner, according to court documents obtained by Us.
Griner, 35, characterized their marriage as “irretrievably broken” in the filing, with “no hope of reconciliation.”
The couple married in 2018, according to the document — a year longer than had been previously reported — and share son Bash, 2.
“It is in the best interests of the Child that the parties be awarded joint physical custody of the Child on a temporary and permanent basis with the parties having parenting time as determined in accordance with the Child’s best interests,” the filing reads.
Brittney is also asking for an “equitable division of all marital assets, both real and personal, tangible and intangible, between the parties.”
Brittney and Cherelle, 34, began dating in 2018 when, according to Brittney, she accidentally took Cherelle’s milkshake.
“You stuck by my side at the lowest and at the highest!” Brittney reflected via Instagram on the couple’s two-year anniversary in 2020. “Your love never wavered with me at any point. If anything it grew and you have shown me how to love and how to be loved!”
Cherelle continued to support Brittney from afar throughout the Connecticut Sun star’s imprisonment in Russia on drug smuggling charges in 2022, working tirelessly to bring her home.
She was released that December after nearly 10 months in a Russian labor camp, thanks to a prisoner exchange spearheaded by former President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“For the last nine months, you all have been so privy to one of the darkest moments of my life and so today, I am just standing here overwhelmed with emotions,” Cherelle said during an appearance at the White House after Brittney’s release. “The most important emotion that I have right now is just sincere gratitude for President Biden and his entire administration.”
Cherelle added, “Today my family is whole — but as you all are aware, there are so many other families who are not whole. [Brittney] and I will remain committed to the work of getting every American home.”
With Brittney back stateside, she soon returned to the WNBA. In April 2024, the couple announced they were expecting their first baby. Bash arrived three months later.
“That’s my man. He is amazing,” Brittney told CBS Sports at the time, noting she would be called “pops.”
She added, “They said as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.”
