Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia barely held it together while discussing his late daughter, Sterling, on an emotional night at Dodger Stadium.

Vesia, 30, earned the save after striking out the side in the bottom of the 9th inning of the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday, April 14, which came on Healthcare Appreciation Night.

During his postgame interview with Spectrum Sportsnet, Alex was told to look up into the crowd where the medical staff who assisted him and his wife, Kayla, during the tragic loss of their daughter, Sterling, last year were cheering him on.

“I’m gonna cry, man,” Alex said. “This is a very emotional day. Everyone up there played a very, very, very big part. [Kayla] and I are just so happy to at least be able to share today. For me to get a save, it’s unbelievable.”

Alex and Kayla announced the loss of their newborn daughter in October 2025.

“Our little angel we love you forever & you’re with us always,” the Vesias wrote via social media. “Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday October 26th. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.”

The couple added, “Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time. Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”

One day before the Dodgers were set to open the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced Alex would be away from the team due to a “deeply personal family matter.”

The Dodgers celebrated Tuesday’s moment via social media after the game, writing, “The Vesias had a special group in attendance for tonight’s game and Alex got the save. 💙”

Kayla commented on the post, “What a way to end the night!!!!! 💙.”

Before the start of the 2026 season, the Vesias shared a statement about their journey.

“The lesson we learned from this is that life can change in an instant, and for us, ten minutes is all it took,” they wrote via Instagram. “Sterling Sol was the most beautiful little girl in the world. We got to hold her, change her diaper, read to her, and love her. Our time together was far too short.”

The couple continued, “Kay and I will keep those precious moments and memories to ourselves and hope anyone listening can empathize and respect our wishes for privacy as we continue to heal and as we navigate the ups and downs of a baseball season. I was not prepared to bring my baby girl home, but we are carrying her with us every single day.”
