Former Binghamton University soccer captain Kayla Saager has died, just months after her wedding, the Bearcats announced. She was 30.
“We are saddened to share the devastating news of the passing of former Bearcat captain Kayla Saager ’19 yesterday in Tulsa,” the athletic department wrote in a release on Thursday, September 10.
The release continued, “During her time at Binghamton, she was a two-time all-region player, 2017 America East Striker of the Year and 2019 graduate. Kayla was a fierce competitor with a deep passion for soccer, but she also will be remembered for her soft heart and immense love of family.”
No cause of death has been released. Saager is survived by her husband, John Beckley, parents Ron and Noranne, and sisters Rachel and Veronica.
“A newlywed with dreams of motherhood and life’s promises ahead, she was taken too soon, the release read. “Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to her husband John and her entire family.”
Saager scored 22 goals over two seasons with Binghamton, leading the team to call her “one of the most feared strikers to don a Binghamton uniform.”
In 2017, her first season with the Bearcats, she was named America East Striker of the Year and helped lead the team to an America East conference championship, one year after the team finished in last place.
“Binghamton women’s soccer is profoundly saddened by the passing of Kayla Saager-Beckley,” head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. “Kayla was a dangerous and dynamic forward with a true gift for finding the back of the net, and her contributions helped elevate the competitiveness and stature of our program. To this day we stand on her shoulders.”
Bhattacharjee continued,“Beyond the field, she was known for her big heart and her deep love of family. We are devastated by this loss and send our heartfelt sympathy and support to her parents Ron and Noranne and her husband John. Kayla, you are forever and always a Bearcat. May you rest in peace.”
After college, Saager pursued a professional career in the Czech Republic. When her playing days ended, she transitioned to coaching, most recently serving as an assistant coach on Troy University’s women’s soccer team, where she also earned a master’s degree in health and physical education.
“We are devastated to learn of the sudden passing of former assistant coach Kayla Saager,” Troy soccer said in a statement via X. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Kayla’s loved ones and all those who knew her during this difficult time.”
