Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore received his sentence just over four months after he was arrested and fired from the school.
Moore, 40, was sentenced to 18 months probation during an arraignment hearing on Tuesday, April 14. He avoided serving any jail time in the ruling brought down by Judge J. Cedric Simpson.
“Incarceration is usually left to those times where an individual continues to impose a risk to society or others, or an individual, this court believes, can’t in some way conform themselves to how we should operate in society,” Simpson said. “I don’t believe, when I look at the entirety of this case, that incarceration would be an appropriate sentence.”
In addition, Moore was instructed to have absolutely no contact with the former University of Michigan staff member who accused Moore of breaking into her apartment in December 2025.
Moore was prohibited from using “alcohol, recreational marijuana or any illegal substance,” and he will be subjected to random testing. He was also ordered to pay over $1,000 in fines and court costs.
The former coach spoke briefly at the hearing, his first official comments since his arrest.
“First of all, I want to thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, for his grace and guidance during this difficult time,” he said. “I want to thank my beautiful wife, Kelli [Moore], for her support and standing by me.”
Sherrone said he had “taken the process very seriously” and was “ready to proceed” with his sentencing.
Kelli sat in the front row during the hearing on Tuesday, with Judge Simpson singling her out for a large portion of the dramatic hearing.
“What she had to deal with was just an incredible burden, and she didn’t bat an eye,” Simpson said.
Simpson added, “I am amazed by you, Ms. Moore.”
After the judge issued his sentence, Sherrone and Kelli embraced, kissed and walked out of the courtroom hand-in-hand.
During a court appearance on March 6, Sherrone pleaded no contest to new misdemeanor charges of malicious use of a telecommunications device in context of a domestic relationship and trespassing.
Charges of felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and misdemeanor breaking and entering were all dropped at the same court hearing.
At the time, First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kati Rezmierski said the decision to drop the initial charges was based on “a thorough review of the additional evolved evidence and investigation” and “consultation with the victim largely through her representatives in this matter.”
Rezmierski also said there was not “sufficient evidence to prove a count of domestic violence in this matter, not historically and not what happened on December 10.”
Sherrone was fired by the University of Michigan on December 10, 2025, after an internal investigation uncovered an “inappropriate relationship” between Moore and the staff member.
Shortly after he was fired, Sherrone was accused of breaking into the staff member’s apartment and threatening to harm her and himself. He was taken into custody shortly after fleeing the apartment.
