Former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan wasn’t about to let a post-surgery scar get in the way of a fun pool day with her two daughters.
“It’s true when they say, take it one step at a time,” Kwan, 46, wrote via Instagram on Thursday, August 27. “6 weeks ago I was on crutches. Now I’m here, carrying my girl. Scar and all. 🙏🏻”
Kwan shared a video of her in the days after her hip replacement surgery in July. The clip was followed by a video of Kwan holding her younger daughter, Della Rose, 8 months, while her older daughter, Kalista, 4, ran beside them at a water park.
The Olympic silver medalist revealed she underwent a hip replacement on her right side in early July, joking that she’d have to miss Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding as a result.
“Sorry to miss Tay Tay’s wedding, but my new hip had other plans. 😄,” Kwan shared via Instagram alongside a video from her hospital bed. “Happy Fourth of July, everyone! I’ll be celebrating from the couch while I recover from a long-overdue hip replacement. Recovery is going well, and I can’t wait to be pain-free and get back to doing the things I love.”
Kwan announced the arrival of Della Rose on social media in December 2025.
“Christmas came early ❤️,” she wrote via Instagram. “I’m overjoyed to share that our baby girl — Della Rose Kwan — has arrived! My heart doubled in an instant the moment I held her in my arms, and watching my daughter walk into the hospital to meet her baby sister brought tears to my eyes.”
She continued, “I’ve always dreamt of having children, and when Kalista came into the world, I was already beyond grateful for a miracle that once felt impossible after years of trying. Getting here again has been its own rollercoaster, and I’m endlessly thankful for my love, who I’m so lucky to share my life with, my family, who I would not be here without, and the incredible doctors and support team who helped make this miracle happen. After more than a decade of hoping, I still can’t quite believe this moment is real.”
Kwan has not publicly named the father of either of her children. The figure skater was formerly married to husband Clay Pell from 2013 to 2017.
“As an Olympian, I’ve pushed my body to its limits and been amazed by its strength — but carrying another life has left me in even greater awe,” she shared after welcoming Della Rose. “There were moments of frustration over how little I could control — a humbling reminder that fertility is something none of us can fully predict.”
Kwan concluded, “To all the moms, moms-to-be, and the women and families dealing with infertility or praying to build a family — I know what you’re going through and I’m hoping you feel loved and supported in every way as you navigate this journey.”
