Quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss time after being diagnosed with a blood clot, the Philadelphia Eagles announced on Thursday, October 15.

“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf,” the team shared in a statement via social media. “He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday.”

The Eagles lost to the Rams, 24-20, in Philadelphia on October 4, a game in which Hurts, 28, was 12-for-27 passing for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

“On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report,” the Eagles continued. “Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play.”

Hurts and the Eagles lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19-17, at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, October 11.

“Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia,” the team explained. “Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter.”

A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed “movement in the small blood clot.”

As a result, Hurts will not play in the Eagles’ game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 17, while the franchise determines “the appropriate course of treatment.”

“His health and safety are our highest priority,” the team concluded.

Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is expected to get the start for the Eagles on Sunday, as they look to break a three-game losing streak.

“It is unclear how much longer Jalen Hurts is not going to play,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

Following the Eagles’ loss to the Jaguars in London – which came on a last-second field goal by Jacksonville kicker Cam Little – Hurts was asked about the team’s play calling.

“It’s not my place,” he told reporters. “We’re prepared. I’m prepared as a quarterback to not worry about those things. I’m honoring the play call, honoring the things that are coming in the game.”
