Former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Reece Weaver announced some major career news after her surprising retirement from the team earlier this year.
Weaver, 24, will make her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago next month, she announced on Tuesday, August 11.
“A DREAM COME TRUE 😭♥️,” Weaver wrote via Instagram.
Weaver will begin performances on September 7 at New York City’s Ambassador Theatre. She will join the production for a six-week limited engagement through October 18.
“I was born and raised as a dancer,” Weaver said Tuesday on CBS Mornings. “I started dance at 3 years old. I have a degree in dance. I went to a performing arts middle school and high school, where I just fell in love with all things arts. I actually did a few musicals growing up in high school.”
She continued, “I just fell in love with the team aspect of growing something and creating something all together. I’ve always wanted to perform on the Broadway stage.”
Weaver admitted to feeling some nerves, but argued that was “very natural.”
“There’s so many iconic people who have played the role of Roxie and an incredible cast,” she said. “I do think there is a challenge ahead of me, but I’m so honored to be on this journey.”
The breakout star of Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Weaver’s retirement from the squad was revealed in the finale of season 3, which premiered in June. Weaver had been with the DCC for three years, amassing over 1.3 million followers on both Instagram and TikTok.
In an exclusive interview with Us in June, Weaver hinted that Broadway might be in her future.
“That would be a dream of mine,” she said. “In high school, we wrote down 10 things that we want to do in the next 10 years. One of them was DCC [Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders]. I had a few other things. But one of them was to be on Broadway. So, we’ll see! That would be such a pinch-me moment.”
Weaver told Us that she made up her mind to retire from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders in March 2025, roughly two months after the Cowboys season wrapped up.
“Going into season 3, my third year on the team, I just had so much gratitude,” she explained. “My cup was filled to the brim even going into this year. I had that in the back of my mind. I was excited and looking forward to year three and what it brought. But my cup was getting really, really full. I went into my last game not thinking and knowing it was my last, but I kind of treated it as it was my last, so I could really just soak it all in. I think I really needed that sense of closure for my mental state.”
