Daniel Ray Leonard, son of legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, was arrested at his father’s home on Wednesday, May 20, after allegedly trying to enter the residence, Us Weekly can confirm. TMZ Sports was first to report the news.
The arrest occurred early Wednesday morning and while charges were not immediately available, online records show that Daniel, 25, was booked on a misdemeanor charge.
“On May 20, 2026, around 5:29 a.m., officers assigned to the West Los Angeles Area responded to the 1500 block of Amalfi Drive for a radio call of a restraining order violation,” an LAPD spokesperson told Us. “Officers arrived and took the suspect into custody for being in violation of his restraining order.”
Daniel allegedly tried to turn “exterior door handles” to the home, prompting Sugar Ray’s security team to call 911, according to TMZ. Police reportedly found him outside the residence and near Sugar Ray’s pool house.
Sugar Ray, 70, had filed a restraining order against his son on Wednesday, according to court records viewed by Us. Circumstances around the restraining order are currently unclear, including whether that was related to his arrest. A hearing is scheduled for June 15.
Daniel is one of two children that Sugar Ray, whose real name is Ray Charles Leonard, shares with wife Bernadette Robbi (they are also parents to daughter Camille, 29.) Sugar Ray and ex-wife Juanita Wilkinson were married from 1980 to 1990 and are parents to sons Ray Jr., 53, and Jarrel, 42.
Sugar Ray has not commented publicly on his son’s arrest but has remained active on social media throughout the day. He posted a photo of himself via Instagram on Thursday, May 21, as part of a paid partnership with Skechers. The picture appears to have been taken in front of his house, where he posed in a yellow polo, khaki shorts and, naturally, Skechers shoes on full display.
The boxing legend has appeared at public events with Daniel and posted about him in the past, including in 2023 when he celebrated his son’s birthday.
“So happy to be with my son Daniel this weekend!” he wrote alongside a photo of him, Daniel, Camille and Robi. “I am so proud of you!!! Happy Birthday!!!”
Thought of as one of the greatest boxers of all-time, Sugar Ray’s career spanned from 1976 to 1997. In that time, he won 36 out of 40 fights, including 25 by KO. He also won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics, competing in the light welterweight weight class.
