San Jose Sharks star Macklin Celebrini was offered a role on the Prime Video hockey drama Off Campus — but he wasn’t about to let it interfere with his crucial sleep schedule.
“Can you tell me why the shoot time was from midnight until 3 a.m.?” Celebrini, 20, asked Off Campus star Belmont Cameli in a one-on-one conversation for The Hollywood Reporter published on Thursday, September 10. “Would that be on a Saturday or what?”
Cameli, 28, who plays Garrett on the show, told Celebrini, “Yeah, it would probably be at the end of the week. If we’re shooting outside — exteriors, for night — you can’t start the day until the sun goes down. And then you’ll want to be rolling camera for as much of the time that the sun is gone as you possibly can.”
Celebrini said with a laugh, “That’s an absurd time to film.”
“There is no absurd time to film,” Cameli explained. “You could be filming at any given moment.”
While Celebrini didn’t add an Off Campus to his résumé, the Sharks breakout star — who was fourth in NHL scoring in the 2025-26 season — enjoys debunking stereotypes about hockey players.
“I think hockey players in general have a bad rap of not having much personality,” he told Cameli. “It’s just what the culture has always been with hockey, but if you meet some of the guys that play in the NHL, they’re some of the funniest guys. I feel like that really doesn’t get portrayed very well on camera.”
Cameli responded, “There’s something about the locker room interviews in hockey that are pretty f***ing serious. We have tons of [body] doubles who’ve grown up playing hockey and they are a bunch of goofballs.”
The actor told Celebrini how he and his Off Campus costar Ella Bright, who plays Hannah, managed to survive “working close to 80 hours every single week” on the show’s first season.
“When I have big full weeks like that, it’s no coffee in the morning,” he said of his routine. “I’ll probably end up with one or two coffees in a day, but I don’t do the first one until hours into the day. If I start with it right away, I’m going to need another one in two hours. Then I’ll end up having five or six more.
Cameli added, “Sugar-free Red Bulls are popular on our set.”
