Troy Aikman got emotional in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth while discussing late colleague David Moulton, who died of cancer on Friday, October 23. He was 59.

“He was a fighter right up until the end,” said Aikman, 59, while visibly fighting back tears. “Sorry.”

After taking a few seconds to compose himself, Aikman continued, “I’ll just say he left a hole in a lot of people’s hearts. Just a good man.”

Aikman’s broadcast partner, Joe Buck, also remembered Moulton, who worked as a spotter in the Monday Night Football booth and previously worked with Buck, 57, on Fox’s golf coverage.

“He is missed up here,” Buck said. “They don’t come any tougher than David Moulton with what he’s been dealing with the last couple of years.”

He added, “He was just so brilliant and so effortless with the way that he would give us information, give [Troy] information during the game. He will not be replaced in this booth.”

Aikman also eulogized Moulton with a social media post on Monday.

“Since 2018, David Moulton has been my right-hand man in the broadcast booth,” he shared via Instagram. “What started as a professional relationship became a friendship I have cherished. David was loyal, dependable and a warrior until the very end. He deserved better. My heart breaks for his family and all who loved him. I’m grateful for the years we shared and will miss him deeply.

Aikman added, “Rest in peace big guy 🙏🏼❤️.”

David’s wife, Julie, with whom he shares a daughter, Melissa, announced the news of his death on Saturday, October 24.

“It is with a completely shattered heart broken into a million pieces I share that my loving husband, David, died last night while in hospice care at the Douglas Center for Caring,” she shared via social media. “David battled stage four renal cell cancer for six long years. It metastasized to his bones two years ago. He never stopped fighting or trying new treatments. He loved life and loved each and every one of you more than words can express. We are so thankful for the love and support you all have given us.”

Longtime CBS Sports analyst Gary Danielson issued a statement about Moulton’s death via reporter Jenny Dell.

“Gary Danielson doesn’t have social media, but he asked me to share these words in memory of our dear friend, David Moulton,” Dell, 40, shared via X on Sunday. “Yesterday was a day I was praying would not happen. David Moulton was my researcher/spotter with our CBS college football crew since 2006!! We first met when I heard him doing a local radio show; became intrigued with his knowledge, decided to cold call him and offered him a job!! He was great and helped make our broadcast better.”

Danielson added, “David, you have so many friends who are hurting today. Love you and will miss our talks, David!!”
