There is no person in the public eye more synonymous with the ponytail than Ariana Grande. Much like Meghan Markle is known for her glossy strands, Ariana Grande is known for wearing her hair up and back — but her look, though centered on a particular style, has evolved throughout her career. And now, she’s getting candid about why the look is special to her, and how she’s decided to change things up in a new interview with Fader.

The chartopping songstress is currently rocking platinum strands and wearing her hair in a low ponytail (a style she debuted at the March for Our Lives a few months ago), quite the departure from her cascading ponytail of the past. On her new look, Grande explained, “The pony has also gone through an evolution, and I’m proud of that. Old pony? I don’t know if she’s that girl. But new pony? I like her.”

Bear in mind, in a Facebook post in 2014, the singer revealed that she felt most comfortable rocking a ponytail because her hair had been left extremely damaged from years of coloring it. And while she recognizes that the style has become her calling card, that doesn’t mean she rocks the look without variety. Throughout the years, she’s added ombre, donned cat ears and added mega-long extensions to keep her vibe fresh.

Another reason for the change? She’s shed her relationship with Mac Miller and is newly dating Pete Davidson. Grande has a new man, so she’s got a fun new style too (she posted a pic of them together wearing a high braided ponytail).

The point: she’s the same artist we know and love, but evolving her identity.
