Turns out, the ultra-light shade was Bey’s concept. “It was Beyonce’s idea,” her colorist, Rita Hazan, exclusively told Us Weekly of color. “We’ve been gradually making her blonder, so it was a natural next step to just go for it and bring her to the lightest she’s ever been.”

The blonde tone played up the dark eggplant color of Beyonce’s old-Hollywood-inspired Phillip Plein gown, which she accessorized with a luxe matching fur stole for the music benefit.

Hazan chose an ultra-light golden hue for Mrs. Carter, 34, that goes perfectly with her complexion. “She can pull this off because it’s the right tone for her coloring. She said let’s go super blonde, the blondest you can make it,” Hazan, who owns her eponymous salon in NYC, told Us.

Beyonce - met gala pony
Beyonce arrives to the “China: Through The Looking Glass” Costume Institute Benefit Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 4, 2015 in New York City.

Though the style certainly harkens back to the stunning power pony the “***Flawless” singer rocked in May, Hazan explained that the color is lighter. “This is such a cool blonde. It… has a good balance of warmth and depth, ” Hazan told Us. “[But] the closest we came to this was the color I did for the Met Gala last year.”

And Bey adores her lighter locks. “She loved it,” the stylist, who has worked with Jessica Simpson and Rachel Zoe in the past, said, though she noted that the shade won’t be long for this world. “She’ll keep it for a minute because it’s hard to get her that blonde and keep it healthy,” Hazan explained, adding that she recommends her Ultimate Shine Breaking Brass and Weekly Remedy treatment to protect her strands.

As for what’s next, Hazan is tightlipped, but shared, “I do have some fun ideas for the future.”
