Beyoncé is opening up about a sweet father-daughter moment.
“Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” Beyoncé, 44, said while narrating behind-the-scenes footage from Jay-Z’s hair makeover in a new YouTube video posted on Sunday, June 21, revealing that he wanted to help their daughter Blue Ivy feel proud about her natural curls.
The singer reflected on Jay-Z, 56, telling her a few months ago that he was planning to comb out his locs for his Philadelphia concert on May 30, in honor of his late father, Adnis Reeves, who also used to “rock a fro.”
In the next clip, which showed Jay-Z getting his locs combed out, Beyoncé narrated, “Now, I wasn’t all the way convinced that he would be able to comb out his locs, considering he had such thick, long wicks.”
She continued, “I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair.”
“Our daughter was about 5 and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time. When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair,” Beyoncé explained, noting he went from a buzzcut to long locs. “We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls. It also inspired Blue to be the voice of the award-winning book, Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry.”
Once Jay-Z started growing out his mane, Blue, who is now 14, noticed they had the same curls, which he kept healthy by using products from Beyoncé’s hair line, Cécred.
The video then cuts to plastic bags filled with Jay-Z’s hair after removing the locs. “We all naturally shed 50-150 strands a day, so imagine almost nine years,” Beyoncé said, admitting that she didn’t want her husband to cut his locs. “It’s a lot of memories stored in locs. Hair grows, people grow, so the transformation can be emotional.”
Starting at the bottom of the locs and working their way to the base, each one came undone. Beyoncé noted that the base was the hardest to untangle, which they removed with her Cécred combs. “It was always a great accomplishment when you could finally break that wick apart and get access to go through one loc at a time,” she said.
“It’s not for the faint of heart,” Jay-Z said, adding he was on day five of the process.
When he stepped out to play in Philadelphia, Jay-Z stepped out with an afro, which Beyoncé gushed looked “beautiful.”
