She wasn’t dressing no average bride! Ms. Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mom, is responsible for some of her oldest daughter’s most iconic looks over the years, including her wedding dress. Though Bey, 34, looked every bit the blushing bride in her strapless white gown with a ruffled train back in 2008, her mom revealed her daughter’s true feelings on that big day in a new interview.
Beyoncé and Jay Z tied the knot on April 4, 2008, but fans only got to see a glimpse of her dress in her 2011 video for “I Was Here.” The video also shows Ms. Tina attending to her daughter, making a few last-minute alterations as Beyoncé beamed. “She was so sweet to let me do that,” Tina, 62, said of designing the gown in a June 24 Today show interview. “She came back later one day and she said, ‘You know, when my daughter gets married, I’m going to let her pick out her own dress. Maybe she wasn’t so excited about it at the time, but she’s a sweetheart.”
Blue Ivy may not wear a Tina original, but Knowles still wants to hand down her family values. During her 2016 CFDA Awards speech for the Fashion Icon Award on June 6, she thanked her family for teaching her the importance of inner beauty and hard work, and she reflected on her own mother, who sewed uniforms and made clothes for the priests and nuns at Tina’s Catholic school in order to afford tuition.
“She took nothing and always turned it into something,” Tina noted of her mother, Agnéz Deréon, Beyoncé’s grandmother. “I’ve tried to pass that on to my daughters. Now they have access to all the beautiful clothes … we took lemons and made them into lemonade.”
And speaking of Lemonade, Tina is still a proud BeyHive member. “I’m obsessed with her album!” she told Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb of Bey’s sixth release. “It’s really amazing.”
