Chelsea Handler Slams Fashion, Wore Combat Boots to Met Gala 2012 to Spite Anna Wintour

"I'm interested in looking good for me, but I'm not interested in going to a fashion show," the Chelsea Lately host revealed to Paper mag in its spring 2014 issue.

Well that’s quite a fashion statement, Chelsea Handler! While other celebrities have attempted tirelessly to thrust themselves into the good graces of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the E! personality has revealed in a new interview that she could care less about fashion.

“I’m interested in looking good for me, but I’m not interested in going to a fashion show,” the Chelsea Lately host revealed to Paper mag in its spring 2014 issue. “It’s not real,” she continued of fashion week. Looking chic and stylish on the magazine’s cover in a strapless printed dress, Handler, 39, added that unlike her peers, she’s actually embarrassed to attend runway shows. “I went once last year with a boyfriend,” the blonde star recalled. “I was like, ‘This is the worst nightmare I could have ever been to.’ I was embarrassed to be there.”

The bestselling author, whose latest book Uganda Be Kidding Me chronicles her travels abroad, continued her tirade by slamming the industry’s biggest annual event: the Met Gala, which Handler admitted she never wants to attend again. “I was like, ‘Why am I here?'” she recalled to Paper mag. “I didn’t have fun.”

To ensure that she was never invited back to any future Met Gala, Handler, in fact, went against the wishes of Wintour herself! “I have no idea what the theme was, nor did I care,” Handler said of the fashion guidelines for the black tie event held to fete the Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli “Impossible Conversations” exhibit. Attendees at the 2012 Met Gala included Cate Blanchett, Gisele Bundchen, and Beyonce.

“I know that I wore motorcycle boots under my Roland Mouret gown,” she recalled of her navy gown, which she wore to the event with then-boyfriend Andre Balazs. (Handler confirmed her split from the billionaire luxury hotelier, whom she dated on-and-off-again for two years, on her show in October 2013.) “I think it was a Roland Mouret, and Anna Wintour was like, ‘She cannot wear motorcycle boots,'” Handler said of Conde Nast’s creative director. Handler claimed she said at the time, “Well then I’ll wear them so I can guarantee never getting invited again.”

She told the mag that she had plans later that day to address any qualms about her appearance on the cover of her new book. While most of her famous pals — Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Charlize Theron — might have asked to be photoshopped in pursuit of flawlessness, Handler did the exact opposite. “Can you make my arms look a little less airbrushed and fatter or more muscular?” she asked the publisher. “No one tells me what to do — in any capacity,” she added.

“Life has become so ridiculous because I have access to such nonsense and I can go to these places,” Handler said of her successes. “I’ve become so infantilized by having so many assistants — people who take care of you and pack for you and dress you. It just never stops,” she continued. “It’s very random nonsense but I’m glad to have it.”
