Making history! CoverGirl announced that James Charles is now the brand’s first-ever male ambassador on Tuesday, October 11. The 17-year-old aspiring makeup artist, who has more than 443,000 Instagram followers, will be the face of the brand’s not-yet-launched So Lashy! by BlastPro Mascara, which is designed to work for all lash types.
“All of our CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe and redefining what it means to be beautiful. James Charles is no exception,” the brand stated in a press release. “One year ago, he boldly chose to launch his Instagram to the world, using transformative, dynamic makeup looks to showcase the many facets of his personality, serving as an inspiration to women, men, guys and girls who might have been afraid to do the same.”
Charles, who appeared alongside his fellow CoverGirl Katy Perry in a campaign photo, took to social media to express his excitement. “I am so honored and excited to be working with such an iconic brand,” he captioned an Instagram post of his CoverGirl photo. “I truly hope that this shows that anyone and everyone can wear makeup and can do anything if you work hard. I can’t wait to share with you all what we have in store, but trust me when I say it’s gonna be real good. 😊💕”
Although we’re still waiting in suspense for more of Charles’ glam CoverGirl shots, his Instagram account is already providing plenty of inspo. Keep scrolling for five reasons why we’re in like with the talented makeup artist.
He Embodied a Snapchat Filter
It’s one thing to use the butterfly crown filter, but Charles re-created the effect using makeup in a September 15 Instagram post. Using Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Moon Glow Kit, NYX Cosmetics’ Jumbo Eye in Black Bean, Occco Cosmetics glitter and Morphe Brushes’ 35B palette, he created a blue sparkling look that makes our hearts flutter.
He Defines Relationship Goals
A fan turned his galactic glam into a funny meme on February 6.
He Bares All
Keeping it real. In a June 6 post, the teen made up half of his face, leaving the other half free of his usual foundation, liner and brow pencil.
“I had a boy I really cared about take advantage of me to a whole new level and it both hurt me, but also absolutely crushed me & my confidence,” he explained. “I wanted to do this post now that I’ve grown and learned from the situation to show you guys that confidence is key … Makeup makes me so happy and feel so powerful and strong and it’s truly an escape.”
He Gets Comical
“Straight outta marvel,” he captioned this comic book–inspired look on October 24, 2015. “I used @makeupforeverofficial HD foundation for the base. I used @nyxcosmetics jumbo eye pencil for the dots. For the black details I used @anastasiabeverlyhills black gel liner. To line my water line and for my lower lash line I used @ofracosmetics white gel liner in the shade of white rabbit. Finally, I used @anastasiabeverlyhills liquid lipstick in the shade heathers for my lips.”
He Slayed in His Senior Photos
“So I retook my senior photos & brought my ring light with me so my highlight would be poppin. I love being extra,” he captioned the most fabulous yearbook portrait ever on September 5.
