Forget orange; grey is the new black!
Dascha Polanco, who plays Dayanara Diaz on Orange Is the New Black, sent shockwaves through the front row at the Tracy Reese fashion show with her bright grey hairstyle at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City on Sept. 7.
The best part about the actress’ sudden transformation? According to her stylist Cynthia Alvarez, it’s actually a wig.
“Wigs are an investment, but it’s priceless when you can preserve the health of your own hair,” Alvarez tells Us. “You can bleach it any color; and all the heat and harm goes to the wig.”
The actress, who typically sports a head full of bouncy brown curls speckled with a few golden highlights, was inspired by Cynthia Alvarez’s signature look, of glam grey hair.
“She called the night before [Fashion Week], and said I’m read to go grey,” Alvarez tells Us Weekly. “She badgered me with excitement about if for the longest, so we just did it.”
Inspired by Polanco’s purple-tinged silver hair? Alvarez warns to take it slow with a well-experienced stylist.
“It is a process. You have to bleach your hair at least twice to get it to a pale blonde. You want to choose a colorist with years of training and experience under their belt. You want to see their work first,” she tells Us.
As far as products Alvarez says every professional should have one piece in his or her arsenal. “All the major colorist use a product called Olaplex, which helps keeps your hair healthy while your bleaching it.”
