Spotted on the runways of Reem Acra, Hugo Boss, and others, the simple style isn’t just for the gym anymore. Celeb hairstylists have given the look a chic update thanks to dramatic parts, added volume, and loads of texture.

Here, the easy how-to straight from the stylists.

Band of Outsiders: Textured Ponytail

Hairstylist Didier Malige of Art Partner created the messy ponytail at the Band of Outsiders show, taking inspiration from the textures like faux fur and mohair from the collection.

To style the ponytail, make a deep side part and mist each section at the roots with Rene Furterer Volumea conditioning spray for texture. Then rough-dry hair with a diffuser, spraying dry shampoo as you go to help form a wave. Lightly back-comb hair at the crown and set with Rene Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray.

Gather the hair into a low ponytail, with hair on one side covering the ear, and secure with an elastic. Divide the hair into two sections and gently pull it apart to tighten the ponytail and push it slightly higher up the neck.

Hugo Boss: Deep Side Part Pony

“I was inspired by the clean and sophisticated styles that Hugo Boss effortlessly produces season after season,” Redken Creative Consultant Guido said of the looks he created for the show. “It was important for me to create a hairstyle that further amplified such qualities of richness and luxury.”

To recreate the ponytail with the dramatic side part, first apply Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer and Redken Satinwear 02 blow-dry lotion to damp hair. Using a natural bristle brush, blow hair dry until smooth. Create a clean deep side part and pull hair back into a ponytail. Secure with an elastic. Spray Redken Forceful 23 hairspray onto hands and smooth any flyways. If needed, use a curling iron to add movement to the ponytail.

Reem Acra Ponytail
A “couture ponytail” is being created backstage for the Reem Acra fashion show during New York Fashion Week 2014.

Reem Acra: Couture Ponytail

Malige calls the look he created for Reem Acra’s show a “couture ponytail.” “Because just like couture clothes, the hair has the underpinnings it needs to give it structure and shape,” Malige explains. While the stylist used up to four sets of extensions on the models, you can copy the look at home without adding any.

First spray hair with Rene Furterer Fioravanti shine and detangling spray at the crown and around the front for a wet sheen. Comb the product through to the ends and work in Rene Furterer Vegetal Sculpting gel and Rene Furterer After Sun Leave In Moisturizing Spray. “The mix of the detangling spray, gel and after-sun product build the shiny wet finish we want and help it last,” Malige explains.

Make a clean part from the left to the right, keeping the hair taut. Gently push the hair forward to give it lift and mold and shape a wave above the hairline. Making sure not to disrupt the wave, carefully gather the hair into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic. Flat iron the ponytail for a smooth finish.
