Prom is supposed to be one of the most unforgettable nights of a teen’s life — and a special delivery that arrived at Juliet Jacoby’s door ensured that. The 17-year-old high school junior from Colorado found the perfect dress on Wanelo.com: a crimson number with a full skirt and sheer sleeves. The only caveat was the $149 price tag. So when her mom found a $35 replica on RoseGal, an online shop with a 3.2 rating on Trustpilot, the family thought that they had lucked out.

It turns out her fashionable fairy tale was too good to be true.

“When I opened the package, I gasped and was shocked by how ugly it was. I cursed a little, and I was floored on how it looked nothing like the picture I saw!” she told Seventeen.com on April 18. “I FaceTimed my friend and she laughed because it was so ugly.”

Luckily, Jacoby’s entire family has a sense of humor as well: She tried on the gown (with a broken zipper, natch) and modeled it for her mom, who “burst out laughing.” The photos of her disastrous dress have racked up hundreds of retweets and wisecracks, not to mention plenty of sympathy.

Jacoby ordered another backup dress that she’ll wear next week, although her dad thought she should’ve done otherwise: He “said I could still wear it to prom,” she continued to Seventeen.com. “But I was like, hell to the no!”
