History has never been this hot. If you’ve ever wondered what underwear looked like a century ago, now’s your chance to find out! In a visually compelling video, Mode chronicles 100 years of men’s underwear in less than four minutes.
Beginning his journey completely naked, a hunky male model transports us to the year 1916 and changes into a pristine white onesie with a button front. As the video progresses, the same man tries on different styles that represent each decade. The ‘20s were relatively modest, but the ‘30s saw the birth of briefs. From then on, things got skimpier and skimpier. And there was plenty of brand recognition: Joe Boxers, Calvin Kleins and 2xist undies all play a role in this video.
The underwear wasn’t the only change in the video. The model sported several different wigs, including one with side-swept bangs, a mod lob and a Joe Dirt–style mullet.
Mode has also done throwback videos on nail styles, hats, engagement rings, wedding dresses and more. According to Avelino Pombo, Mode’s director of videos, it all began with social media.
“It started with the Throwback Thursday hashtag. We noticed when we featured YouTube influencers taking a modern-day outfit and throwing it back a decade, people were resonating with it. So we decided to do our own throwback videos,” Pombo told Philly.com. “Each one takes a full day. There is a lot of prep work that goes into it. … We use one stylist, one hair person, one makeup person. We have a really lean team.”
