If sweltering heat outside followed by an overly cooled office space has you scratching your head wardrobe-wise (and shivering at your desk), Jennifer Hudson has your answer.
The Color Purple alum, 34, throws on a denim jacket to keep warm inside and avoid overheating outside. “When it’s summer, that means a lot of air conditioning. Somebody like myself, I get cold a lot,” she told Women’s Wear Daily on July 29. “I feel like the denim helps keep you warm at times, but it’s still cool enough to wear in the [heat].”
The mom to David Jr., 6, whom she shares with longtime fiancé David Otunga, adds extra pizzazz to her toppers with sewn-on flair. “To me the patch is a younger version of a brooch,” she explained, while wearing a personalized “JH” design on the back of her jean jacket from her collaboration with New York & Company. “They give you something to play with, add to things. Switch it up.”
Versatility like that is key for Hudson, whose outfits often work overtime. “I have a lot of things to do throughout the day, being a mom, going to work,” she said. “I like to make sure my clothes are interchangeable, they’re comfortable and they look good at the same time. I’m a working woman.”
But sometimes Hudson’s mom duties get in the way of her fashion game. Case in point: the 2016 Met Gala. The American Idol alum was in the middle of posing pre-carpet when she was interrupted by her son, who plopped down and took a nap on the train of her white custom H&M gown. “Boys, I tell you!! Really munch!” Hudson captioned the hilarious pics via Instagram.
Despite the pre-event dress drama, the Dreamgirls actress looked stunning in the ensemble and opened up to Us Weekly about how special she felt. “I helped design it,” she said on the red carpet. “So I think it’s the perfect dress for me!”
