Whether she’s on stage, around town or just hanging out with her kids, there’s no doubt Jennifer Lopez lives her life as the ultimate style icon. “We call her ‘Bronx Barbie,'” Lopez’s stylist, Rob Zangardi tells Us Weekly of the New York City-born musician/actress, whom Us readers chose as their Celebrity Style Crush for the week of April 22.
Always on trend, rarely outlandish or overtly sexy, Lopez stands out from the crowd with her sophisticated edge, says Zangardi and Lopez’s co-stylist Mariel Haenn. “All of the roles she plays [allows her] to carry so many different types of looks. Jennifer is an artist, actress, a mom which allows her to embody all these different styles,” explain the fashion duo.
Her most daring fashion moment may have been when she donned the Versace dress that left oh-so-little to the imagination at the 2000 Grammys, but Lopez — who dared to bare yet again at the 2013 Grammys despite the Academy’s edict not to show too much skin — is normally careful to walk the fine style line of staying sexy and maintaining her integrity.
“Sometimes when I get home and I’m not feeling so great, I make myself go to the gym. Then I come home and take a shower, put on a great outfit, some makeup, tie my hair up, and I feel pepped up and great about myself,” Lopez — who split from twins Max and Emme’s dad, Marc Anthony, in April 2012, tells Redbook. “I think that for some reason, when you maintain yourself, people are really surprised. It’s inspiring for women who have kids and take care of themselves to be sexy.”
One of Lopez’s most grown-up and elegant style moments, according to her stylists, was the 2011 Met Ball in New York City, where Lopez took a major fashion risk in head-to-toe red Zuhair Murad. “It is not an easy look to pull off and she did it effortlessly,” Zangardi explains.
During her 2011-2012 stint as an American Idol judge, Lopez pushed style boundaries by trying out bold, splashy colors and exquisite accessories. “When I got into the business, I developed a love of monochromatic looks,” Lopez tells Harper’s Bazaar. Later, she evolved to a sexier look. “Then it was classic things, movie stars, Jackie O. And now all of these things mixed together, that’s my style.”
