As a professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars, Karina Smirnoff knows all the right moves to look great while working hard. Since spending hours upon end in the studio can wreak havoc on skin, the professional dancer has learned how to break a sweat without breaking out.
"Ideally, I try not to work out with full make up on since a lot of breakouts happen because your pores are open and the makeup and sweat clogs them," Smirnoff, who, with her partner Sean Avery, was eliminated after week two of the reality competition, tells Us Weekly. "To avoid break outs I use a protective lotion as my base, try to keep my hair off my face when I sweat and use either an exfoliant or Clarisonic immediately after I work out."
When she does have to wear makeup for the camera, Smirnoff, 35, uses Stila. "They have a huge variety of makeup that looks great on camera and for everyday wear," she says. "It seems to mesh well with my skin because since starting to use it on the show, I haven't broken out as much."
But she always makes sure to go to bed with clean skin. The best skin care advice she's ever received? "Never sleep in your makeup," Smirnoff tells Us. To take off any makeup in the evening, she uses Apothderm Skin Care Brightening Cleanser with her Clarisonic.
When disaster does strike and a zit pops up, Smirnoff reaches into the refrigerator for a quick home remedy. "I mix lemon juice with baking soda to make a paste and apply it to the blemish. I leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then wash it off," she tells Us. To add further protection, she applies a dab of Apothederm Acne Clarifying Treatment.
