Wearing white? That doesn’t mean you have to add a pop of color with a statement lip. While many starlets tend to complement white outfits with bright red and berry hues — especially around the holidays — Kate Hudson proved it’s not the only way to go at the 2016 People’s Choice Awards in L.A. on Wednesday, January 6.
In fact, she rocked a much more natural look, and the effect was angelic. “I feel that sometimes people overdo it when they’re going to an event,” Leslie Lopez (pictured behind the scenes with Hudson below), the celebrity makeup artist behind Hudson’s look, exclusively tells Us. “That looks beautiful too, but I wanted to give her a fresher, all-American face for the outfit she was wearing. It was less expected to [go natural] than to do the darker lip and stronger eyes.”
For Lopez, who also works with Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker and Chelsea Handler, the nature of the outfit helped determine the direction of the makeup. “The inspiration is always what she’s wearing. The jumpsuit was such a modern look,” she said.
Lopez started with Burt’s Bees Sensitive Daily Moisturizing Cream. After it absorbed, she applied foundation (mixed with the same lotion to prevent a cakey effect) and a dusting of powder to offset shininess in photos. Lopez played up Hudson’s eyes with warm brown eyeshadow tones and added a healthy glow with peachy blush. The finishing touch? Burt’s Bees lipstick in Iced Iris, a “very pretty pink” that tied the whole look together.
