Kelly Rowland blew everyone’s #TBTs out of the water during a recent interview with The Coveteur. As she gave the website a tour of her sprawling West Hollywood home, she also took a walk down memory lane.

The former Destiny’s Child member, 35, can’t help but reflect these days — after all, she’s in the midst of searching for the next big girl group in her new BET series, Chasing Destiny. While the mom to 17-month-old Titan, her child with husband Tim Weatherspoon, earned plenty of accolades during her time in the Grammy Award-winning trio, she also has a few less-than-golden moments as well.

Celebrity makeup artist Eric Ferrell “was the very first person to do my face when I was 15,” she told The Coveteur. “That was when I learned how to contour. But I didn’t do it at all very well, I was horrible at it. I remember Destiny’s Child was at the Brit Awards and I attempted to contour my face. … I looked like a monster.”

But thankfully, she’s had success with trial and error since then.

“Between makeup artists like him taking their time to show me how to [use makeup] and what colors to use on my skin—you learn and you fall in love with it,” Rowland, who’s launching a beauty line with “chocolate” girls in mind, said.

Rowland also picked up a few tips from the “glamorous” Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mom and the costume designer for Destiny’s Child.

“She always wore her red lipstick and her orange lipstick, and I remember I was scared to try those colors, and she was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Wear whatever you wanna wear!’” Rowland reminisced. “She just made me feel that it didn’t matter what shade I was—I could try anything. She made me feel like I could try it all!”
