There were plenty of noteworthy moments on the season 5 premiere of Mad Men Sunday night, but it was Megan Draper (played by Jessica Pare) who truly stole the episode.
Don may have been mortified by his wife’s sultry rendition of “Zou Bisou Bisou,” at his surprise 40th birthday party, but fans went wild for her glamorous look, especially her retro eye makeup.

“We didn’t want Megan to look like Joan or Betty with their ’50s-style thick pancake foundation and red lips because she’s younger and hipper,” the show’s head makeup artist Lana Horochowski tells Us Weekly. “The inspiration was a young Sophia Loren mixed with a mod Twiggy and some Cleopatra,”
For reference, Horochowski poured through magazines and watched movies from the 1960s. She even used her mom’s old high school photos. “My mom wore a full set of fake eyelashes everyday.”
To create Megan’s mod look she applied a white cream shadow over the entire lid up to the brow bone and into the nose, then topped it with a pale blue powder shadow (NARS Eyeshadow in Heart of Glass). “The combo made the perfect baby blue color,” she says.
Next, she used liquid liner to do an extreme cat-eye effect (“I really swooped it past the outer corners”), and smudged some liner along the crease for extra definition.
She layered the entire lash line with long individual fakes before applying a thick strip of pointy ones. (Her lower lashes were also enhanced with flares.) Several coats of mascara pulled all the lashes together.
On the lips she used NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Belle de Jour with NARS Blush in Desire on the apples of the cheeks.
“She loved it!” Horochowski says of Pare’s reaction to the look. “She wanted to go home with it everyday, but we made her wash her face because no one was supposed to see her!”
