It's time to give the gloss a break; red lips are the color d'summer.
Mindy Kaling, Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana glammed up their beauty look with cherry-picked shades on the red carpet. At the Fox Summer TCA All-Star Party on July 20, Kaling paired her jade Tadashi Shoji dress with a bright red lip. Kruger also went blood red at the Fox party, which added drama to her Marios Schwab jumpsuit.
Saldana, who's expecting her first child, also went with a vibrant brick red lip at the Guardians of the Galaxy premiere in L.A. on July 21.
The key to wearing the trend successfully is to choose the right shade. "If you have very dark hair, try blue-reds. If your hair is golden brown, try an orangey red," L'Oreal Paris consulting makeup expert Billy B. tells Us Weekly. "If you have white-blonde hair, blue undertones look great. Golden-blonde hair looks best with a yellow-based shade."
Not sure where to start? Pick up Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Scarlet (bottom right, $33, Sephora.com). "It's a classic blood red that works well on all skin tones and complexions," Dolce & Gabbana national makeup artist Christian McCulloch tells Us. "To create a full proof red lip, first apply the lipstick directly to the lip. Then take a lip lining pencil, I use Dolce & Gabbana Lip Liner Pencil in Ruby, and finesse the edges to make a really nice, sharp shape. To finish, simply blot and reapply the lipstick."
If you dread reapplying lipstick, go bold with Lancome Rouge in Love Rouge Valentine (top right, $28.50, Lancome-usa.com). The long-lasting lip color finishes with an intense, flattering shade of red.
Or, take a cue from Saldana and swipe on the similarly colored L'Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche in Rose Symphony (left, $9.99, Lorealparisusa.com). The moisturizing formula blends seamlessly and the rich pigments create drama.
