Nicole Richie’s Colorist Dishes on Her New Purple Hair

Nicole Richie with her new light-purple hair color on March 7, 2014

When Nicole Richie casually debuted her new lavender hair color on March 3, it made us stare in awe and, to be honest, a little confusion. Why purple? Why now? Should I dye my hair too?

Luckily, the colorist who's responsible for the new hue, Danny Moon, is dishing on Richie's daring look.

Unlike celebs like Margot Robbie and Kate Bosworth, who dyed their locks for roles, Richie just wanted to do something different. "She was itching to try a new pastel shade," Moon, a Pravana guest artist at the Andy Lecompte Salon in LA, tells Us Weekly. "She said pastel colors are sophisticated."

But which pastel shade to choose? For inspiration, Richie used the fake picture of her with purple hair that was posted on Instagram the week before. "She was looking for a shade similar to that lavender," Moon says.

Keeping in mind that the color will inevitably fade after repeated washing, Moon used Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids Violet and Pastels Mystical Mint. "We picked something vibrant that would fade to an equally beautiful shade," he tells Us. To condition the hair, he finished with Nevo by Pravana :60 Second Deep Treatment.
