Beauty rebel!
Reese Witherspoon has been a Hollywood mainstay for years, and no longer subscribes to the cliche book of red carpet rules. The actress, 38, was anti-fall in a shockingly bright orange lipstick on Nov. 19, at the Wild premiere in Los Angeles. While other celebs play it safe with typical nudes and plums, Witherspoon walked on the bold side with a citrus smile.
So how exactly do you pull off orange lips in the middle of November? Follow tips from celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who gave Witherspoon her eye-catching option.
Downplay Every Other Feature
“When wearing a bright orange lip, I try to make the lip the focus,” Quynh tells Us Weekly. “Definitely keep everything else on the face minimal.” With the lips being the focus on the face, get them smooth as silk via a lip primer or a lip balm, before adding any color.
Make Lashes Pop, Warm Up the Face
Quynh suggest toning everything down, but play up the lashes and wear a blush. “Define lashes with mascara and wear a coral cheek too,” she said. “This works well on Reese because she was wearing all white and the pop of color looked great against her tanned skin.”
Tone Down the Fashion Too
It’s either a bright orange lip, or a bright orange dress. Trying both looks at once can be tricky, unless you’re Sarah Hyland. “Wearing an orange dress with an orange lip can look too matchy,” Quynh advises.
Orange Lipstick Is for Everyone
You just need to find your perfect shade. After establishing your undertones, try out a bunch of colors that fall within that spectrum. Cool tones work well for almost everyone, and warm shades complement more neutral skin tones. “There are many variations of orange, so if you’re intimidated, choose an orange that’s not so bright or a sheer texture,” Quynh said.
