Here, the star's makeup pro, COVERGIRL celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams, tells Us Weekly how she gussied up the Vera Wang-clad, Modern Family actress for her big night.
Us: What was the inspiration for Sofia's Emmy look?
Kayleen: The dress! We rarely do a colorful lip on Sofia — it is usually a strong eye instead. We wanted to do something different and playful. I chose a strong coral lipstick and kept the eye subtle.
Us: What are some red-carpet makeup looks Sofia loves?
Kayleen: Sofia loves to look very feminine and sexy. We always give her a strong brow and lots of lashes (with COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara). Once we have those features covered, there is room to play with her eyes, lips and cheek color.
Us: What's the biggest challenge getting a star like Sofia ready for a high-profile red carpet?
Kayleen: I find it very rewarding to work with a star like Sofia. It makes me proud to know that so many fans are seeing Sofia's look and are inspired by the beauty choices we make. It can also be slightly stressful to know so many people at home are watching!
Us: How do you ensure that her makeup will last throughout the carpet and the show?
Kayleen: The trick to making her makeup last all night is to set the look properly from the beginning. Sofia takes great care of her skin so we have a healthy, moisturized canvas to begin with. After that I start with concealer, followed by foundation and then set the entire look with powder to ensure her skin looks great all night.
Us: Was there one product that she loved and took with her to the show?
Kayleen: I send off Sofia to the red carpet stocked with powder and her favorite lipstick: COVERGIRL Lip Perfection in Rapture!
