Three decades later, we’re still living in a material world—but now there’s a new generation of material girls! Disney starlet Zendaya paid tribute to the original Queen of Pop, Madonna, at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, Aug. 10, in a bubble-gum pink frock from the music superstar’s clothing line, Material Girl, named for her 1984 hit song of the same name.
Like Madonna’s iconic pink gown from the “Material Girl” music video—itself a send-up of Marilyn Monroe’s performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” from the 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes—Zendaya’s dress featured a big bow in the back, but around her neck, not her waist. It also had a halter keyhole neckline and side cutouts.
“This is the updated version of the Material Girl,” the Shake It Up actress said on the red carpet of her custom outfit. “It’s a tribute to the one and only Madonna.”
The 17-year-old singer was revealed as the face of the Material Girl clothing line—co-owned by Madonna and her daughter Lourdes Leon—back in June. “I can’t believe that Madonna and Lola chose me!!” she blogged at the time. “(Wait, that means they know who I am!!)”
Zendaya also showed off a new ‘do at the Teen Choice Awards. Instead of her usual long locks, she wore her hair in a short, wavy bob with thick bangs. Smoky eyes and pale pink lips completed the glam look.
