Yes, Janelle Monae is an actor, singer and model, but she also knows that more means more when it comes to making a statement on the red carpet. The petite breakout star of Oscar favorite Hidden Figures (and she also co-starred in the indie darling Moonlight) is never one to set limits with her style, either. Take, for example, the 2017 SAG Awards, when Monae, 31, rocked beyond-bold brows, bright-hot orchid lips (CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Color & Gloss in Vivid Violet!) and a double bun 'do accessorized with butterfly clips.
Jewelry just for fingers? No way. For the 2017 Golden Globes Awards, Monae adorned her piled-up-to-there updo with delicate pearls. And this was not an uncommon occurrence for the "Electric Lady" singer; she set the hair-jewelry trend that has since spread like wildfire (see: Danielle Brooks and Drew Barrymore.)
At the Variety Creative Impact Awards at the 2017 Palm Springs International Film Festival, she once again adorned her 'do with an unconventional accessory: safety pins. Perhaps a political statement, as many celebs have been seen sporting safety pins to show their solidarity with the vulnerable following the November 8 presidential election. But Monae, a CoverGirl spokeswoman, also added a powerful pop of color to her pout to go with her strong voice.
Clad in a cape, only Monae could pull off the mohawk/French braid she displayed at 2015’s Met Gala, themed China: Through the Looking Glass. The artist’s hairstylist, Caprice Green, said she “gravitated toward a more badass chick theme, like Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” for inspiration to create the “not fussy with a rock-star twist” style.
