Over a year in the making, Beyonce’s headlining performance at Coachella on Saturday, April 14, lived up to the hype in every sense. Nicknamed #Beychella, Queen Bey slayed on stage in not one — but FIVE — custom ensembles by French fashion house Balmain that were every bit worthy of the history-making night, in which Bey became the first black woman to ever headline the annual Palm Springs-based music festival.
The set, which comes a year after the mogul had to cancel her performance due to her pregnancy with twins Sir and Rumi and included appearances by former Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, was the kind of statement-making spectacular we have come to expect from the fierce songstress, and we were just as entranced with her #flawless style as we were with her vocals. Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing told Vogue that he was approached by Bey’s stylist Marni Senofonte after his fall 2018 runway about collaborating with the singer for the event, and it’s been a whirlwind ever since.
The mom of the three was looking to evoke a “military style” with references to Mad Max and futuristic silhouettes, and her team paired with Rousteing to dream up two completely unique sets of costumes (one for Saturday’s performance and another for next Saturday night) that included armor-like beading, patent leather, thigh-highs and headpieces. The designer told Vogue that B (as he calls her) is “a perfectionist” and said he learned “a lot” from working with her and her team. After all, he was also responsible for outfitting her army of 200 backup dancers and musicians and sat through her entire 11-hour rehearsal to ensure the costumes presented as intended.
With every detail planned to perfection, Queen Bey apparently even managed to swap out her nail color mid-set. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that one moment she was rocking a jet-black mani and the next she had a sparkling holographic design. While that is the kind of beauty magic only Beyonce can achieve, nothing surprises Us or the Beyhive anymore.
