Beyonce Returns to Met Gala After 10 Years: Photos of Her Style Evolution on Fashion's Biggest Night

Beyoncé was once a staple on the Met Gala steps. Now, after 10 years away, she’s making her highly anticipated return. The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer made her debut on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City back in 2008. After two years off from the event, she returned in 2011 and became a mainstay for six years in a row. Beyoncé took a step back from the Met Gala after 2016 as her schedule became busier. However, in December 2025, the Destiny’s Child member was revealed as a co-chair of the 2026 Met Gala alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. The theme of the event is “Costume Art,” with a clever “Fashion Is Art” dress code for attendees in accordance with the opening of the Condé M. Nast Galleries collection. While fans wait to see what Beyoncé will wear at her first Met Gala in a decade, take a look back at her style evolution on fashion’s biggest night:

2008

Beyoncé first stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet wearing an elegant, strapless blush Armani Privé gown. The year’s theme was “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.” One month before the gala, the Grammy winner tied the knot with husband Jay-Z, who also attended the party.

2011

Beyoncé took a two-year hiatus from the Met Gala before her return for the event’s tribute to Alexander McQueen, “Savage Beauty.” She wore a black and gold mermaid-cut dress designed by Emilio Pucci, and her look came with a little secret: a baby bump. She and Jay-Z welcomed their first baby, daughter Blue Ivy, in January 2012.

2012

Beyoncé added a little more flair to her Met Gala look by wearing a sheer black dress with beaded and lace floral detailing throughout. The bottom of the gown, designed by Givenchy Haute Couture, also featured a pop of color in bright purple. The theme was “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.”

2013

The “Halo” singer then leaned into the Met Gala’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme with her boldest look yet: A Givenchy black and yellow dress with a thigh-high slit in the front and matching boots and gloves. Earlier that year, Beyoncé hit a milestone when she made her Super Bowl Halftime Show debut.

2014

Beyoncé sported another Givenchy look for the following year’s “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” theme, a black and white sheer dress in a beaded polka dot pattern.

2015

Beyoncé went bold again for “China: Through The Looking Glass,” as fans could look right through her sheer beige Givenchy dress with beaded accents. She and Jay-Z arrived late to the event this year, reportedly because of a last-minute wardrobe change.

2016

Rounding out Beyoncé’s Met Gala looks was another Givenchy dress designed by Riccardo Tisci for “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” The ensemble featured pearl details, high shoulders and dramatic eye makeup — a drastic change from her first Met Gala appearance eight years prior.
