Cameron Diaz Would Never Want to Go Back to 25 Years Old: ’25 Sucked’

Age is just a number to Cameron Diaz.

“When I was 39 in interviews, people kept asking me, ‘Aren’t you scared to turn 40?’ And I was like, ‘Do you know something? Should I be scared? What’s going to happen?'” Diaz, 43, said at an event for her new book, The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time, in NYC on Tuesday, April 5.

The Annie actress, who married Benji Madden in January 2015, didn’t follow the idea that somehow 40 was different than 39. “I was like, ‘I feel great! What am I supposed to be afraid of?'” she said.

But the interviews weren’t really about whether Diaz, whose new book goes into detail about how women age at the cellular level, was all right physically. “I realized they weren’t asking me, like, ‘Are your bones OK?’ They were like, ‘You know, the death of your career is sort of imminent. You’re 40 years old in Hollywood and you’re probably going to start not being as viable as you’ve been for the last 20 years, because you’re not 25 anymore and that number 40 is really, really scary,'” the Body Book author explained.

But Diaz says that getting older actually leads to more contentment. “It’s called the U-bend of happiness. Basically, when we’re 18, we’re happy. Of course we are, duh,” she said, laughing. “Then, when we’re in our twenties and thirties, it starts to get stressful and life isn’t so much fun. Then, in our forties, we start to lighten up a bit more — we’re more comfortable with ourselves, we’re more knowing, more connected, more appreciative. [At] 50, it’s even better. But if you make it to 85, you’re the happiest you’ve ever been. Isn’t that amazing? Because you get there and you don’t give a s–t. … Look, I’m 43. … It’s not as hard as 25. Twenty-five sucked.”

Getting older, Diaz realized, is all about doing what makes you feel good, even if it means going under the knife or getting injectables. “There’s no judgment,” she said of her book’s philosophy. “We don’t bash the cosmetic industry, it’s not about that. … If getting Botox makes you feel better about yourself, good on you. But please do not think it makes you younger on a cellular level. … That’s fine — do it. But you have to take care of the inside. That’s really what it comes down to.”
