How to Painlessly Detangle Your Kids’ Hair

Tangled
Find out the best way to detangle hair!

Put down that comb!

While detangling your child’s knotted hair may be a lesson in patience, odds are you’re doing it wrong. Instead of starting at the root and working your way down, celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend recommends doing the opposite.

"Always start detangling from the ends and work your way up," Townsend tells Us. "If you just comb from the root down, you push all the tangles together, creating one huge knot, which can be disastrous."

Townsend, who works with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, also suggests arming yourself with a brush (not a wide-toothed comb!) with give. "I use the Harry Josh Pro Tools Detangling Brush," he tells Us. "It has the perfect amount of cushion, meaning the hair will not snap and break off the way it would with a comb."
