Baby name expert Pamela Redmond Satran isn't surprised Nicole Richie and Joel Madden named their baby son (born early Wednesday morning) Sparrow James Midnight Madden.

"Bird names are definitely getting hotter," Satran -- who co-wrote Baby Name Bible and runs Nameberry.com -- tells Usmagazine.com. "Of all the animal names, bird names are the hottest."

A bird name also has a "spiritual symbolism: they're seen as light, one with the sky and nature and in a more uplifting, positive way than other animals, like a fox, which is more macho," Satran says. "Nicole Richie is a free spirit."

Satran also points out that Sparrow and Harlow, Richie's 20-month-old daughter, have the same ending: "ow."

But she notes that Sparrow is typically a girl's name.

"It's an interesting choice for a son because you really can't tell if it's a boy or a girl," she says. "Something we've started to see is parents being much more open to giving their sons names that have a feminine feel or are unisex."

The middle name, James, is "conventional," Satran points out, "in case they want to go by that later in life." (Harlow's middle name is the traditional Kate.)

Midnight, like Harlow's second name Winter, denotes a time or season, which is often found in African culture, Satran says. "Some of the earliest African names in the U.S. were Afternoon, Easter, Christmas and Friday," she says. "You have to think there's some pattern [with Harlow and Midnight]."

Midnight "might be the kind of name you would expect somebody trying to make it as a punk rocker to give themselves," adds Satran. Madden is the frontman for band Good Charlotte.

There's a difference between celeb kids and normal kids though, so I doubt the kid will get beat up or made miserable through out school. One, that kid is more than likely not going to be going to public schools, and even if they do send him to public schools, everyone is going to know that kid has money. He's going to be famous by proxy.....I still wouldn't name my kid Sparrow though....

He will be beat up, made fun of and harassed in school by other kids his entire school years. Kids are mean and are just looking for a reason to cause trouble. Good for you parents, you just started your kid out in life with alot of unnecessary pain, that's showing love at the start. Idiots.

CUTEE NAME! OHH IT'S PRECIOUS! LOVE IT!

  • September 09, 2009 - 11:30pm Anonymous

I think it means they obviously dislike their son Sparrow more than their daughter Harlow. That is really distasteful. They don't have to grow up with the name, their poor son does. I'm sure he'll be taken seriously as he enters his adult life.

  • September 09, 2009 - 10:58pm Anonymous

They're both idiots so it's no surprise they'd name their poor child a stupid name!

  • September 09, 2009 - 10:19pm Anonymous

I like it! I fits them and it's different! Very cute and congrats to them for the birth of their son! What a cute family!!

oh please, she named him after Captain Jack Sparrow
