Love her or hate her, it’s safe to say that Anne Hathaway is very self aware these days. As she continues to do press for her new outer space blockbuster Interstellar, the polarizing celeb, 31, has made several references to her many critics, who popularized the term “Hathahate” during the 2012-2013 awards season.
After covering Harper’s Bazaar’s November issue next to the headline “Anne Hathaway Kiss and Make Up,” the Oscar winner also made light of her past flubs during the Nov. 3 episode of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
In the interview, she brought up a recent embarrassing moment at the American Cinematheque Awards, where she was tasked with honoring costar Matthew McConaughey. Hathaway was forced to follow the actor’s other famed costars Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, and Sandra Bullock, and when she stepped on stage, the teleprompter with the text of her speech broke.
“It was embarrassing, but the thing about me and embarrassment is you have to remember is that it all happens on a scale,” she explained to Fallon. “So if you think about embarrassment [on a] scale of one to 10. One is just being a person walking down the street, and 10 is, for me, co-hosting the Oscars with James Franco, which is only tied with being honored to accept an Oscar whilst wearing a dress that I knew made it look like my nipples were erect. So if that’s a 10, that was a four.”
Franco and Hathaway disastrously hosted the Oscars in 2011, a performance which has been widely savaged in the years since. Then in 2013 Hathaway accepted the the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables.
At the time, her dress choice got more buzz than her actual award. Hathaway was originally meant to wear a “pink embroidered tulle illusion gown” by her close designer friend Valentino, but upon discovering that her Les Mis costar Amanda Seyfried was wearing a similar dress, Us Weekly broke the story that Hathaway “started throwing a fit.” The A-lister then swapped her ensemble and opted for a blush-colored Prada column dress. Thanks to some poorly placed darts, it appeared like the actress’ nipples might have been visible. After the mishap, Seyfried later tweeted, “I love you Anne.”
“I forgot about that dress, that’s the best,” Fallon said laughing.
“I can’t forget about it. It haunts me still,” Hathaway joked, grinning.
She went on to tell the hilarious story of showing up at McConaughey’s house for a party on the wrong day, referencing the Franco Oscars gig yet again. Watch her endearing interview now!
