Well, that’s embarrassing. Chris Matthews was caught fawning over Melania Trump on a live microphone during the Indiana primary earlier this week.
The MSNBC commentator, 70, could be heard talking about the jewelry designer off-camera as his coworker Brian Williams reported about her husband, Donald Trump, winning Indiana on Tuesday, May 3. At the time, the network was broadcasting footage of Melania, 46, walking toward the podium with the rest of her family.
“Did you see her walk? Runway walk. My God is that good,” Matthews said, apparently unaware that his mic was hot.
Williams, 57, quickly cut to a commercial break. Unfortunately, it wasn’t fast enough. The Hardball With Chris Matthews host, still not realizing that his mic was on, continued to rave about Melania, saying: “I could watch that runway show.”
Matthews has yet to speak out about the matter. Melania’s spokesperson, however, released a statement to Variety on Wednesday. “Melania Trump is an accomplished businesswoman and entrepreneur in her own right, achieving tremendous success in a variety of industries, including an illustrious modeling career, as well as being a dedicated wife and mother,” the statement read. “It is unfortunate to see the continuous inaccuracies and misrepresentations made by the media of Mrs. Trump as anything less than the independently successful woman that she is.”
