Felicity Jones opened up about the death of her late costar Anton Yelchin in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s been devastating,” the Theory of Everything actress, 32, said of his passing in a freak accident in June. “It doesn’t feel like there’s any justice or there’s no way of understanding it, really. It’s just been a very difficult time for his family. They’re very dignified, beautiful people. He was just like no one else. He really was a unique soul.”
Jones and Yelchin played love interests in the award-winning 2011 romantic drama Like Crazy. The Drake Doremus–directed film showed the ups and downs of a relationship between two college students, one British and one American, after she loses her visa and is unable to return to the U.S. to be with him. The movie won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize.
As previously reported, Yelchin died at age 27 at his L.A. home on June 19, when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his driveway and pinned him between his brick mailbox and a security fence. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter confirmed to Us Weekly that the actor died of blunt traumatic asphyxia within a minute of the accident.
In August, Yelchin’s parents — Irina and Viktor Yelchin — filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler after it was revealed that the company recalled their son’s car model in April. The Star Trek actor received a notice about the recall just seven days before his death.
“He was our only son,” Viktor said during a press conference that same month. “It is against nature when a parent buries his own child.”
Irina added: “He never cared about being a star. He loved life very much. … His death is gonna save some other life.”
