Jason Derulo Talks Jordin Sparks Relationship Post-Split: “I Wouldn’t Say Good Terms”

Jason Derulo told Ryan Seacrest on Monday, Sept. 29, what really caused the split between him and Jordin Sparks, and where their relationship stands.

Tackling it head-on. Newly single Jason Derulo addressed his split from girlfriend of three years Jordin Sparks during a radio chat for On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Monday, Sept. 29.

"I'm not one to throw my business out on the street, but I thought it was important because things are getting a little out of hand," Derulo, 25, said of the rumors surrounding his breakup. "What happened… in a nutshell, there was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons… There was a lot of pressures of marriage. There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that that just weighed on our relationship over time. When you stop having more good times than bad bad times, it’s time to call it quits. It becomes something that is unhealthy."

One reason for the steady stream of arguments? Derulo admitted that Sparks, 24, wanted to take their relationship to the next level, while he wasn't ready to commit entirely. "To be fair, it was not just from her either," he added of the pressures of marriage. "It was kind of from everybody. That’s not the sole reason, but it definitely played a part."

He added that the tension weighed heavily on them both. "We think it may have weighed on her more than it weighed on me. Yeah, she got frustrated a lot. She was in that frustrated space a lot and I think part of that was part of my problem," he explained.

Derulo also reiterated that cheating played no part in the couple's split. "There's different stories, like me just having too much going on right now, but it’s a combination of a lot of things. No, there was no infidelity," he said on the radio show. His comments mirror his statement to Us Weekly from last week, when Derulo said: "As in all relationships there are ups and downs and at this time we have decided to amicably part. Infidelity, cheating or deceit played no part in our relationship or our breakup, and I hope that people respect our privacy as we move forward with our lives."

During their happier days together, Derulo penned the romantic ballad "Marry Me" for Sparks. For now, that song — along with the couple's duet "Vertigo" — have been cut from his set lists. "I think it will be tough to perform a lot of different songs," he reasoned. "That was a huge time in my life. It doesn’t go away. Those times in my life when I felt like that, I really did feel like that."

After all, the two were together from 2011 to 2014. "Three years [is a] very long time," Derulo told Seacrest. "I think sometimes you can be in a relationship so long, it becomes a part of your life and you feel like you’re obligated. And when you start feeling obligated and you start feeling like it's something you have to do because it’s necessary, like breathing, that’s not a good situation either. It should be something different."

He added that they aren't exactly on speaking terms just yet. "I wouldn’t say good terms," Derulo said of his current dynamic with Sparks. "I'll be lying if I said that, but it’s not a bad situation. There’s no bad blood. We didn’t end off on a weird way or a negative way. It’s not like we’re hitting each other up, like, 'Hey, what are you doing today?'"
