Joel Madden isn't afraid to be a fool for love. In fact, it's kind of his M.O. Before the Good Charlotte rocker married Nicole Richie in December 2010, his big romantic move was begging. In a new interview with Australia's 60 Minutes, the 34-year-old singer reveals that Richie, 31, only agreed to go out with him because he wouldn't stop asking.
"I'm not for every woman, you know. Because a lot of women -- I mean, obviously, your first thing is, 'What do you want your guy to look like?' And I'm not the tall, dark, handsome guy," he says. "But I think [you like me] once you get to know me -- like how I got Nicole."
"When I first would see her around, we were friends," he recalls of his wife, with whom he has two kids, Harlow, 4, and Sparrow, 3. "But I don't think I'm the obvious choice. I'm always like, 'Just give me a shot. Just give me one date.' If I can get my foot in the door..."
Richie, of course, did eventually give him that one date -- and many more after it. Four years after they first got together, the couple tied the knot in Beverly Hills in a winter-themed ceremony officiated by Run-DMC rapper and reality star Rev. Run. Last December, they celebrated their second anniversary.
"Sometimes I keep it to myself and sometimes I can't help myself and I gotta tell the whole world how much I love her," the rocker wrote in a sweet note about his fashion designer love. "I feel like the luckiest man alive to have my wife and kids. When the world outside breaks me down, they build me back up. Hope everyone out there finds this kind of love."
