Katy Perry: Exes Have Been “Intimidated” and “Threatened” by Me

Katy Perry opened up in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar.

Katy Perry is looking for someone to love her “Unconditionally.” The pop star, 29, opened up about her talked-about love life in the cover story interview for the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and spoke about her career and notoriety becoming a problem in her relationships.

“A lot of times I’ve ended up with people who have been intimidated by me, unfortunately,” Perry told Bazaar in the October issue. “They say they’re not, but it comes out in the long run. They’re threatened, or there’s resentment because they don’t know how to handle it.”

The “This Is How We Do” singer famously dated John Mayer after the end of her two-year marriage to Russell Brand, and has also been linked to stars including Diplo, Florence & the Machine’s Rob Ackroyd, plus Robert Pattinson, and Josh Groban

“As I’m heading into my 30s I have less time for bulls–t,” Perry added. “I look for the same characteristics: a sense of humor — someone who makes me laugh off the charts — someone who is sensitive, someone who loves and understands music, and who is really smart.”

The importance of said qualities emerged in recent years, following her 2012 divorce from Brand, now 39, who blindsided Perry when he filed divorce papers in late 2011.

“What I’ve learned is that if you don’t have the foundation of self-love first, you really have nowhere to pull love from to give it away,” Perry said of her growth since her heartbreak. “I had to learn about taking care of myself before I could take care of others. I want to mommy everyone. I want to take care of them. I want to save them, and I forget myself in the meantime. I learned that through therapy.”

While she has the instinct to mommy the men in her life, Perry also spoke about her thoughts on motherhood and the pressure that is put on her as a female artist to define herself in her personal life.

“Why am I a baby machine?” she said of people’s obsession with her childlessness. “Why can’t I be a mogul? I want to have a baby, sure, but I want to have a career. I want to have a record label. I want to have an incredible tour. So I’m going to have all of those things. Let’s talk about that. It’s like, get off my ovaries, okay? I’ll do it in time.”
