Remember that one time the queen of covers took on Prince? Kelly Clarkson wowed the audience at her show in St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, Aug. 4, with a cover of Prince’s classic hit “Purple Rain.”
“I’m such a fan of other people’s music and I get tired of singing my own, so I let a fan at each show pick a song and we learn it that day,” she prefaced her cover of the ‘80s hit. “I mean, we all kind of knew this song we’re about to do because everyone knows it.”
“I ask you to love me, and not judge me, because it’s such a great classic song from someone from here,” the 33-year-old singer added of her decision to tackle the Minnesota native’s smash hit.
In video clips of the performance, Clarkson lends her trademark soulful voice to the power ballad, putting a wistful spin on the classic.
Thus far, the American Idol alum has gotten positive feedback from the big-name artists that she’s covered. Late last month, after paying tribute to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” during a packed show at Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, she and the “Bad Blood” singer exchanged some Twitter love.
“Kelly Clarkson covered Blank Space and YES,” Swift tweeted the next day.
“Girl I’ve been covering your songs since ‘White Horse’!” Clarkson responded. “I love them! I wish they would have requested ‘Clean’ #favorite :)”
Clarkson, who has been making her rounds throughout the country on her Piece by Piece tour, has already successfully covered the likes of ’N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye,” Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball,” Nick Jonas’ “Jealous,” Swift’s “Blank Space,” and Rihanna’s “Stay.”
