Leonardo DiCaprio Transforms for The Revenant: Watch Intense First Trailer

A far cry from the dapper Jay Gatsby! Leonardo DiCaprio transformed for his latest role, becoming a burly, hypermasculine fur trapper for the upcoming thriller The Revenant

Coming off of his Oscar-nominated turn in The Wolf of Wall Street, DiCaprio, 40, is already getting buzz for next year’s Academy Awards with his role as The Revenant‘s Hugh Glass. The first trailer made its debut on Friday, July 17, and the beloved star shows off an entirely different look in the sneak peek.

The preview opens with a shot of DiCaprio covered in fur, standing alone in the midst of a snowy mountain range. He takes on the real-life story of Glass, who explored the West in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

“I ain’t afraid to die anymore,” the actor mutters in the trailer. “I’ve done it already.”

DiCaprio as Glass is then shown on his many adventures and brushes with death as he explores uncharted territory, battles with vicious enemies, and fights to survive in grave conditions. In one particularly intense moment, Glass’ breath is the only thing that can be heard as he struggles to stay alive.

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman), The Revenant is an adaptation of Michael Punke’s 2002 book by the same name. The dramatic flick also stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter, among others.
