Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Meryl Davis: "I Love Her"; Plus, Kate Upton Run-In Explained
Digging the dancing queen! From the moment Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovksiy were paired together on season 18 of Dancing With the Stars, their chemistry was electric. It was so intense, in fact, that fans of the show started to wonder whether they might be more than just dance partners. Us Weekly caught up with Chmerkovskiy at the 32nd Annual Fred and Adele Astaire Awards on Monday, June 2, in New York City, where he revealed the key to their relationship.
Asked to talk about his bond with Davis, the DWTS pro teased, "About our romance?" Then, smiling, he said, "No, we're good. We're great. She's an amazing person."
Pressed for more, the 34-year-old season 18 champ did what he does best and danced around the question. "[The rumors are] always circulating around us dancers. It's fine. That's the nature of what we do," he explained. "We're always in close proximity to each other. In order to produce what Meryl and I produced, there had to have been so much chemistry, and we had it. And that's what leads people who are not used to that to speculate, which is great. I love that."
He also loves Davis—though whether that love is romantic, we may never know. "I love her. I love her!" he gushed to Us. "I love her as a person and for what she has allowed me to do with our choreography and how much she's embraced it...I literally had a perfect partnership with Meryl. Everything just came together."
"She's a brilliant person, and she's also very normal," he added. "I enjoyed my time with her. It was sad when the season was over." That doesn't mean their relationship is over, though. "I'll meet her for dinner and everything is great," he told Us.
Incidentally, Chmerkovskiy sparked rumors of another romance this week when he posted and then deleted a photo of himself with ex-girlfriend Kate Upton. The DWTS pro and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model dated for six months before splitting in December 2013.
A source tells Us Weekly, however, that the exes' reunion at hotspot Tao was purely accidental. "They ran into each other," the insider says. "They said hello briefly but are not back together at all. He was very cordial...They aren't on bad terms."
