Merry MiMi meltdown! Mariah Carey got emotional during her first of six holiday concerts on Monday, Dec. 15, delivering a wild performance inside NYC’s Beacon Theatre.
The songstress took to the stage in a tight bejeweled red gown, where she sang her holiday hits including “All I Want for Christmas” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.” At one point, Carey unexpectedly lost a shoe but continued singing as she clutched her heel in one hand and a gold microphone in the other.
The most poignant moment from the Elusive Chanteuse‘s show, entitled “All I Want for Christmas Is You: A Night of Joy and Festivity,” was when she sang her trademark 1993 ballad, “Hero.” Carey powerfully delivered the hit, until tears started streaming from her face. (It remains unclear what triggered the waterworks, but this Christmas will be Carey’s first as a single mom, after she and her husband Nick Cannon announced their split this past fall.)
She composed herself and then, her microphone pack fell off her glittery gown. “Really?” Carey said before the crowd. “I’m sorry — cut!” After an assistant ducked out to help her with the brief malfunction, Carey then picked up from where she left off.
Carey’s latest show comes several weeks after she disappointed fans on Dec. 2, when she failed to show up to pre-tape her performance at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting ceremony, and later, struggled to hit her famed high notes during the actual live show. Find out more details about the show.
Despite the minor hiccups from her show Monday, attendees told Us Weekly that the Grammy winner was all-around incredible. Carey, meanwhile, happily shared a photo of herself onstage from that evening late Monday, writing: “Finally got into the holiday spirit tonight & it’s only the beginning! Loved celebrating with you! #AIWFCIY #Lambily # MC20.”
