Melissa Rivers continues to mourn her late mom Joan Rivers. After the New York City Medical Examiner's Office concluded the late comedienne's cause of death resulted from surgery complications, Melissa tweeted: "In response to NYC's Medical examiner's report, we continue to be saddened by our tragic loss. No further comment at this time."
"OCME [Office of the Chief Medical Examiner] has completed its investigation," a statement from spokeswoman Julie Bolcer obtained by The Hollywood Reporter read earlier on Oct. 16. "The cause of Ms. Rivers’ death is anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest during laryngoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with propofol sedation for evaluation of voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The manner of death is therapeutic complication. The classification of a death as a therapeutic complication means that the death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy."
In short, the Fashion Police host died from low blood oxygen to the brain during the endoscopy.
As previously reported, Rivers died on Sept. 4, following a minor throat procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy. According to reports, Joan underwent an unplanned throat biopsy during the visit on Aug. 28, during which she stopped breathing. The comedienne was then taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and put into a medically-induced coma. Ten days later, she was laid to rest at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan.
