Michael Phelps Says His Unborn Son Will Be “Water Safe,” Will Travel to Rio for 2016 Olympics

Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson

One stroke at a time! Michael Phelps may be a reigning Olympic champion, but the athlete isn’t going to try to force swimming upon his unborn son, he exclusively told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview.

“He’s definitely going to be water safe, that’s for sure!” the 22-time medalist said at the NBC Olympics promo shoots in West Hollywood, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 21. “If he wants to swim, I’ll let him. But I’m not pushing him. Everyone’s been commenting like, ‘I guess he’ll be in the Olympics in 2032, but no… if he wants to swim, he’ll swim, but he’ll definitely be water safe, that’s for sure.”

Phelps, 30, and fiancee Nicole Johnson announced their happy baby news via Instagram on Wednesday, Nov. 18 — but according to the most decorated Olympic athlete in history, the pair already have loads to plan for. (The pair got engaged this past February.)

“It’ll be a different process going into this Olympics and I think it’s just one that I’m looking forward to and we’re excited about,” he said, adding that their son, who is due in May, will most likely be joining them in Rio for the 2016 Olympics.

Phelps had initially retired from the sport in 2012, but announced in 2014 that he will be returning to the Olympics — his fifth — to compete next year.

And while Johnson, 29, has been his main source of support throughout his training, he admitted that the tables have somewhat turned now that Johnson needs his help as well.

“Pregnancy brain really does exist,” he told Us. “I thought that was just a myth! Pretty wild. We’re just doing what we always do, just supporting one another with everything. Nicole and I have had a long history and we’re just better than ever and I guess better now than we ever have been.”
