Authorities in Myanmar deported Hong Kong-based actress Michelle Yeoh on Wednesday. According to the Associated Press, Yeoh, was placed on the Asian country's blacklist for her portrayal of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in The Lady.
According to a government official, the Memoirs of a Geisha actress arrived in the country's main city, Yangon, on June 22, and was deported the same day. The official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, didn't say why she was on the blacklist.
Yeoh, 48, said she hoped her portrayal of Suu Kyi would raise awareness about the Nobel Peace Prize winner's story. Suu Kyi was adamantly against Myanmar's military dictatorship, and was detained in 1989 and then held for nearly twenty years.
